Merlin the Magician only exists in myth and legend – at least that’s what archaeology student Jason Carpenter thought until he discovered the mysterious orb that had housed history’s greatest wizard for 1,600 years. Forced into an uneasy alliance, Jason and Merlin are sucked into a web of deceit, intrigue and murder that sends them on a chaotic race to outwit, and out run, Merlin’s ancient nemesis, the evil sorceress Morgana le Fay, her gang of drug smugglers and a 500 year-old Chinese necromancer. Tis a race against time to complete their quest before an army of dragons are unleashed on a vulnerable and unsuspecting 21st century world.

Finished this one a few days ago and I would have reviewed sooner but I couldn't wait to read the next in the series. Awesome book. I love the way Diehl has brought historical/mythological figures to life in this century while telling a great story. I read it in a day-and-a-half because I just couldn't put it down. Read it and make sure to read the others.

Revelations The Merlin Chronicles Book One Volume 1 Daniel Diehl 9780615879802 Books Reviews

I enjoyed this book so much that I bought the sequel and am waiting for the third. I only give it 3 stars because of two reasons. One, a sex scene that was unnecessarily graphic between the two kids helping Merlin. That scene made me not be able to share the book with my kids (unless I somehow figure out how to censure that part on ). The other is that the author did tend to go a little overboard with archeological minutia. On the other hand, Merlin as a character was absolutely adorable, lovable, and formidable! Morgana we everything I ever wanted to hate in her! I loved the premise, the plot, and the twists. I can't wait for the third book to come out!
I’m a huge fan of Arthurian fantasy, and this one I found absolutely Amazing.

The way Daniel captured Merlin and chuck him into the 21st century, was superb. He’s characters are extremely well developed, Jason being our MC, and archaeologist that dug up an orb, dated back a time when those orbs weren’t found. The orb carried Merlin’s essence and I’m sure you can get the picture how this story starts.

I’m not going to give anything away from this novel. It’s one worth buying and you won’t be disappointed. I can promise you that.

I personally love it when a fantasy is realistic and Daniel has written it beautiful.

I couldn’t put it down.
I have read a lot of science fiction and many variations on the Merlin and King Arthur story and yet this one is a another completely different angle. So far King Arthur has nothing to do with this story, more specifically about Merlin and Morgana's history. Merlin has been hiding from Morgana Le Fey for many centuries and his hiding place is unknowingly discovered by an archeology student named Jason during a dig with his professor and other students. The adventure that ensues is very entertaining and hard to put down. I am certainly grabbing the next book and rest of the series as it comes out as this looks to be another great addition to my collection.
This is a full-length contemporary fantasy/paranormal novel with a great storyline, tying Merlin, the sad remains of Author's legacy, Morgan le Fey, and dragons into the present-day world through an archaeological dig. Development for the main characters is okay and the book does stand alone, clearly part of a series but not left with a cliffhanger ending for readers to rue.

The presentation is good, actually professional, with quality formatting and decent proofreading. But a skilled content editor would have helped this book considerably, trimming what amounts to rambling in places, especially in the first 13-15% of the story. (Remember when we used to count pages?) A judicious use of transitions would have trimmed more fat, and such pruning would have improved the story's flow a lot. There are points in the book that can only be described as dragging and unfortunately, many of them come early on, before the reader becomes invested in the characters.

The book's upbeat, wide-eyed-fascination tone only breaks for serious action, which occasionally creates a dichotomy between the characters' moods (worried, frightened, unhappy) and the narrator's influence. But most jarring to this reviewer was the characters' easy willingness to trust total strangers in life-threatening circumstances.

[SPOILER ALERT]
In one memorable instance, while driving through the Gobi desert our main characters come across a man walking along the road, who turns out to be purely evil. So the next time they're driving along and come across several men walking down the road, what do they do but offer them a ride? Yes, this is Merlin, and yes, the main character's an ordinary guy, not James Bond or some highly-trained warrior capable of taking care of himself. But still, you'd think they'd learned something. And Merlin proves himself capable of levitating; couldn't he have levitated their Jeep out of the sand?
[END SPOILERS]

All in all, this is a good story told slowly, by an author with real imagination but perhaps no critique group while writing. The book includes the second book's opening chapter, and it may yet convince me to continue the series. Hey, it IS a pretty good story. 3.5 stars

I love to read anything to do with Merlin and having Merlin in the modern day world was just too good to resist. We start off by meeting Jason who is an archeology student in England although he is American. He seemed a great guy all in all and took all of the things that happened to him once Merlin appears in his stride, I am not sure many people would do as well as him with all of the shocking news he is told.

Merlin needs no description at all, he is a legend. He did seem a bit dithery at times but being stuck in an orb for 1,600 years there is no wonder. With this said though he is absolutely great, he knows that he must stop Morgana and he sets about doing that as quickly as he can with the help of Jason.

During their dangerous adventure to Mongolia they both have near death experiences along the way but they also meet some very nice people who are willing to help them. And a book with Merlin involved wouldn’t be complete without a dragon’s appearance.

I really enjoyed reading Revelations, and I think it was a perfect name for the book. For anyone that loves fantasy books they will love this.
A great fantasy written with amazing attention to detail. Diehl has put together a truly immersive book that speaks to the adventure seeker in all of us!
